Flagler Schools' policy prohibits students from carrying any medication to school, from school, or during school. This policy includes cough drops, sunscreen, eye drops, lozenges, skin creams, and non-prescription and prescription medications. If a student needs to have medication during school hours, a parent/guardian will need to bring the medication to the school clinic and complete the appropriate paperwork. Medication brought to school by a student cannot be returned to the student to take home. Unauthorized medication will be taken and disposed of. Each medication must be in its original container and must match the doctor’s order exactly.

Epi-Pens, prescription inhalers, diabetic medications and supplies, and pancreatic enzymes may be carried by the student with a written authorization by the parent and physician. The parent/guardian must complete appropriate paperwork with the school nurse in advance of the student carrying these items.

Any changes in medication must be made in writing and delivered to the clinic. This includes any over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, cough drops, antacids, etc. All medications are to be picked up by the parent/guardian on the final day of the school year. Any remaining medication will be destroyed following approved procedures.

Over-the-counter medication can be administered in the clinic. Parents/guardians must bring a new, unopened bottle of the medication to the clinic and complete and sign a consent form. No expired medication will be accepted.

In accordance with Florida Statute 1002.20, Flagler School Board Policy 526 Administration of Medication states: 

A student may possess and use a medication regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration for over-the-counter use to treat and/or relieve headaches while on school property or at a school-sponsored event or  activity without a physician's note or prescription.

Parent or guardian must annually complete the authorization form permitting the student to carry and self-administer headache medication. 

The required parent authorization can be found "My Forms" on the Parent Portal. "My Forms" will be open and available at the start of the 2024-25 school year. 

Prescription medication will be administered through the clinic at designated times. All prescribed medication must be brought to school by a parent/guardian and be accompanied by the proper documentation from the prescribing physician and the parent/guardian. All prescription medications must be in the original container and labeled with the student’s name, medication name, dose and instruction, and expiration date.

The clinic may have a limited supply of clothing to loan students in case of accidents. These clothes need to be washed and returned to the clinic after use. A parent/guardian will be called to bring the student a change of clothing if no clothing is available to borrow. Families are encouraged to supply their student with a change of clothes if there is a possibility of a bathroom accident.

No student will ever be prevented from visiting the clinic. However, students who make excessive visits to the clinic miss valuable classroom time. If this occurs, we will contact the parent/guardian to discuss your child's needs.

Under the supervision of the Flagler Schools Medical Director, and the approval of the Superintendent and Flagler County School Board, the nurse in your child’s school is able to provide additional first aid treatment with your permission. No student will be given any medication without a physician's order.

• Minor wound care (cuts, scrapes, and abrasions): Vaseline, alcohol, triple antibiotic ointment, bacitracin
• Minor eye irritation: Sterile eye wash
• Minor bites and stings: Sting relief pad, calamine lotion, 1% hydrocortisone cream
• Minor upset stomach and indigestion: Water

Flagler Schools has a “no nit” policy. Any student sent home with lice/nits cannot return to school until checked and cleared by the nurse. The student will not be allowed to ride the bus, attend extended day, or attend any school functions until they are cleared.

If a student is found positive, upon their return to school, they must be checked in the school clinic and cleared by the nurse. Once cleared by the nurse, the student may go to class. If a student is not cleared by the nurse, the student will be sent home and rechecked when they return to school. Students are allowed a maximum of three (3) days excused absence per infestation of head lice, and the student must make up their school work. A flow sheet will be maintained by the clinic.

Lice kits will be available to parents, upon request, while supplies last.

The parent/guardian will be contacted by the school to have the student picked up or to discuss other options.
